Previous Principal's Messages

6/7/21

Hello BTM Families,

We are working to close out the year strong as well as prepare for the new year planning to be back full time 5 days a week.  As a staff, we are reflecting on the year.  We have experienced many challenges, as everyone has, and there are some silver linings.  We are thinking about those and finding ways to incorporate things we have learned this year into our regular practice.  Next year we will continue our focus on building positive relationships throughout the school community.  Our Leadership Class has started to look at what BTM should focus on every day as our core values.  We will take their ideas to our staff and our community, seeking feedback and then implementing these things and establishing what these things look like in different areas of the school and in different situations in the school.  We are excited about rallying around this work and coming together to clarify what we stand for as Bulldogs.  This work will have impacts on future Bulldogs and we are taking this work seriously.  We will be seeking feedback from the community next year.

We look forward to hearing from many of you all!

In Partnership,

Scott

A Message from PTSA about help for an 8th Grade Celebration
Dear parents,
We are coming to the end of another school year! In prior years, 8th grade parents would host a celebration especially for 8th graders, normally in the form of an evening dance. Because we can't do that this year, we want to hear from you!
We are looking for imaginative parents to step up and coordinate a drive-through event, as well as volunteers to make it a reality. This event won't occur without your help! Coordinators will have volunteers and support from the PTSA, teachers, staff, and possibly 7th grade parents. If you have an 8th grade student and would like to have some sort of event to help celebrate, we hope you will consider helping make this event happen. If you have a 7th grade student, your help would be greatly appreciated so that 8th grade parents can celebrate with their kids!
Here's what we know:
 - It would likely be held during school hours on either June 23rd or 24th (TBD)
- The PTSA has a small budget to contribute
- The District will allow such an event with participants remaining in cars (no walk ups or gatherings allowed)
-  We have a few people willing to help with tasks, but need someone (or multiple people) to head it up, organize, and execute.
If this is important to you, we hope you will take an active role in making it happen for the kids this year.
Let us know if you would like to help or need more information.
- BTMS PTSA Board

From the week of 5/3/21:

Hello Bulldog Families,

Happy Teacher Appreciation Week!!  ;)

With eight weeks left of school, we are beginning to find a new groove in our latest instructional model, Concurrent Hybrid Learning.  We are thinking a lot about how to engage ALL of our students when some are here 2 days a week and most are online each day.  I am delighted that our staff is focused on how to make the best of this situation and I am hearing really positive feedback from students and teachers.  Our counselors asked students to complete a survey about how they were feeling about the model and have set up some groups for those students who felt they would like to connect with their counselor.  We were happy to see that the feedback from students was very positive.  We will be doing some surveys later in the month as well that will help us in planning how we support students in the future.  Again, we want you to know that our objective is to make this work Academically, Socially, and Emotionally for ALL of our students.  We are here for them and you.  Thank you for your partnership during this time and all year as we have navigated so many changes and challenges.

Please look below for announcements from our Health/PE and Counseling Departments.

Respectfully,

Scott

Family Heritage/Cultural Event!!

We are planning a Family Herritage/Cultural Event with the help of the AMAZING Nicole Auayan, who will be moving on to MTHS with the rest of her family next year.  Here is the flyer, as well as the links to submission forms, for the Family Heritage Program. We have a submission due date of May 21st to give us time to put it all together, and May 27th to launch. Depending on what we receive, we are hoping to have enough to span multiple days. Submissions are open to everyone who is part of the BTMS community - students, parents, teachers, staff, administrators, etc. - so please share, consider submitting something, and encourage at least one other person to submit something as well.

3/13/21

We have two announcements and then a message about how things will work on Monday the 19th.

  1. A note from our PE/Health Teachers:

Dear Parents and Guardians,

As part of our ongoing efforts to foster a school climate of respect, and as part of our middle school health curriculum, we will begin a unit on Family Life and Sexual Health (FLASH) and HIV/AIDS Prevention Educator (KNOW) on May 10, 2021.  We want to let you know about the unit in advance.

Some of you previewed these materials at the virtual open house this fall.  If not, you’re welcome to contact the district and preview them now. Please contact Patty Schultz at the Edmonds School District office at 425-431-7147 or by email at schultzp@edmonds.wednet.edu.

We want to encourage you to discuss the issue at home too.  Your child may bring home “family homework exercises” to do with an adult in the family (however he or she defines “family”). These assignments are strictly optional.  They are also confidential; students will NOT be asked to report back what you have discussed.  The purpose of these assignments is simply to give you a chance to communicate with one another. If more than one adult in the family wants to participate in these exercises, that’s great.  You may want to take turns, so the student gets special time with each adult. Please note, these optional family homework activities are separate from the required assessment assignments students will complete.

Please do not hesitate to contact your students’ PE/Health Teacher with any questions.

  1. Just a reminder that this Thursday and Friday, the 15th and 16th will be totally Asynchronous and teachers will not be available for Study Club so that they can prepare for students’ return to the building on Monday the 19th.

Hello BTM Families,

I have prepared below, a little guide through the school day for students staying home and for students who plan to come to the building.  I hope this will help.  I am also currently setting up 3 separate meetings for students and families.  All will be on Thursday.  One will be for 7th graders, one for 8th graders and one for family members.   I have not been able to commit to times for the student sessions on Thursday due to meetings I need to attend that are still being planned, but I will do this as soon as I can and send times and links to students and families.  I am hoping to do these Thursday Morning.  I have a family Webinar set for Thursday at 6:30 PM.  The link to the Family Webinar is here.  For all of the meetings, I will show a video created by our counselors, present a slide or two, and will then provide opportunities for Questions and Answers.

Thank you all for your patience as we have been figuring these things out.

In Partnership,

Scott

morrisons@edmonds.wednet.edu

Students staying home will have the same classes and same teachers in the same order, but the times will be different.  Teachers will guide both students who are in-person and students who are remote at the same time.  There may be times when students at home will work asynchronously during the period.  Here is the new Stage 4 schedule.

Daily procedures for Students coming to the building:

Information about BUSSES may not reach you until Friday.  Our district has been opening schools for the last month.  Middle and High Schools are the last to open.  Our system is maxed out at this point.

Masks must be worn at all times.

Students will check-in at one of 3 Check-In Stations.  Two stations will be located at the front of the school near the bus drop-off.  One will be located near the family drop-off by the gym.

PLEASE BE SURE YOUR STUDENT IS COMING ON THE CORRECT DAY!!  We have very little capacity to accommodate students who are on site on a wrong day.

Cohort A joins us Monday and Thursday.

Cohort B joins us Tuesday and Friday.

All students work Asynchronously on Wednesday.

Students MUST have an attestation filled out before entering the building.  Middle School families may choose to allow their students to complete the attestation form on an alternate device.  This is arranged through the application.

After students check-in (attestation is confirmed) students will be given a sticker to place on their person so that staff can see that the student has been cleared to enter the building and proceed to their first-period class.

Students who come to school in person will be given a hard copy of their schedule with a map during 1st period.

During the first week of school, we will have Leadership and Dog Squad students assisting in the hallways, along with our staff.  There will be more than enough help for students.

At the beginning and end of classes, students will be asked to wipe down their stations with materials approved by the Health District.

Starting Monday our Advisory teachers will change to second period and students simply stay in second period for announcements and other Advisory activities.

Lunch is attached to 4th period (see the list here).

Students may eat in the cafeteria or outside.  The cafeteria is arranged so that students will be able to follow the Health District Guidelines.  We are providing some covered areas outside where students can eat.  We have a huge SPORT COURT where students will be expected to follow the same safety guidelines as they do for PE.  This area is supervised by the amazing Mr. Jones who is very helpful and ensures students follow the guidelines.  Please Dress Warmly!!!!!!

The lunchroom is cleaned according to safety guidelines between lunches.

We will not be using lockers.

Students may bring backpacks.

Students will not be changing for PE.  (Good thing we’re wearing Masks!!)

Restrooms have been adjusted to meet health standards and capacities have been adjusted and we will be monitoring earnestly.

Here is a pdf. link to the flow map of the school.

Here is the most up to date schedule (note that Zero Period has been corrected to start at 7:20)

Hello BTM Families,

We are looking forward to serving our families and STUDENTS as we implement our Stage 4 in-person learning plans.  We are prepping our classrooms and our whole building to be ready for students who choose to join us in person.  We are equipping classrooms with the technology needed to serve students no matter their location during class time.  We are still buttoning down some details about how we enter the building and other procedures.  We will share this information with you as soon as we get everything settled.  I have included some of the information the district has provided below.  The Edmonds School District Website is an outstanding resource with information you may find helpful.  You can find it here.

Six Period Day

BTM will continue with the 6 period day model in order to maintain continuity for the rest of the year.  This also allows teachers to see their students more often.  Our teachers love to see their students every day they can.  A more detailed schedule and more specific information is forthcoming.

Drive-Up Day!! Wednesday, March 31st, from 11 am until 5 pm

Come SEE and say, “HI!” to your teachers as you drive through the school parking lot! Teachers will be out front in school colors. There will be "BULLDOGGIE BAGS" for students with treats supplied by our PTSA. There will also be an opportunity to donate to our Hero Squad Fundraiser which is supporting kids with leukemia and lymphoma. We ask that everyone stay in their cars as you visit.  Hope to see you there! (And a BIG Thank You to Mr. Dalton for coordinating this!)

SPRING BREAK HALF DAY!!

As you probably know, our virtual Half Way Half Day was such a success we will be hosting another day just like it THIS FRIDAY.  Most students have signed up for their activities, but if your Bulldog has not, have them check their school email account for Mr. Treadway’s email.

From a previous ESD Communication:

Stage 4 (7th-12th grade)

A/B/C hybrid model for in-person and fully remote students

  • For Stage 4, 7th-12th grade teachers will teach hybrid in-person students and remote/fully remote students concurrently via Zoom by operating on an A/B/C hybrid model. In this model, students who choose in-person attend class on campus two days each week. Students who choose to remain fully remote, as well as the hybrid in-person students on their remote days, will all Zoom into their classes.

What days will my student attend in-person classes?

  • Group A (last name begins with A through Le)

    • In-person Mondays/Thursdays

  • Group B (last name begins with Lea through Z)

    • In-person Tuesdays/Fridays

  • Group C

    • Fully remote students

  • Wednesdays

    • All students will remain remote on Wednesdays with independent learning.

(From Mr. Morrison:  Because of the complexity of scheduling students to be on the same days as their families, and being sure classes are balanced for safety, we are not able to change student groups.  This is a district-wide practice.  Thank you for understanding)

Why did the district decide on this model for secondary students?

This hybrid model avoids reshuffling student and staff schedules. Buildings will continue with their current master schedule, and for the most part students will keep their current teachers. There is a possibility that some individual student schedules need to change due to cohort imbalance or class size. Teachers who have requested a remote assignment for medical reasons, will continue to teach remotely with the in-person students supervised by building staff.

Timeline for Stage 4

  • Thursday, April 15 and Friday, April 16:

    • All Stage 4 students will have independent learning assignments (asynchronous) to allow time for teachers to set up their classrooms and prepare for the transition.

  • Monday, April 19:

    • A/B/C hybrid/fully remote model begins for all 7th-12th grade students

  • Bell times:

    • 7th-8th grade: 8:10 a.m. - 2:10 p.m.

    • 9th-12th grade: 7:20 a.m. - 1:20 p.m.

Hello Bulldog Families,

First of all, we are really looking forward to seeing our students back on campus, however that may look.  Please know that I do not know any of the specifics of what this will look like since this is being planned as this is being sent.  We are making preliminary adjustments to the building and making plans for mitigating risk for when we have students and staff back on campus.  We are thinking about as many possibilities as we can so that we can be as ready as possible for when we have more details.  Please look for the emails from the district which explain what families need to do before we come back.  If you have troubles with this process, please feel free to call the school and we will help guide you.

We are excited to share this with them and others who could benefit from it.

WOOHOO!! THANKS!!

3/1/21

Hello BTM Families,

I’m sure you have heard that we will not be coming back to the building this year in the typical way.  As easy as this might seem to do, and as much as we would like to, our district leadership and teachers have determined that the amount of disruption would make doing so prohibitive.  The disruption would be considerable due to offering an A/B Hybrid model as well as a fully remote option which would impact which teachers would teach which classes (on-site or remote) and which students would attend or not.  We DO have some opportunities for our students to return to buildings in other ways. We will have more about this after we get more details worked out.  We will have more information next week as we begin to solidify plans.  The planned return time for these Academic and Social and Emotional Learning activities will be later in the month.  Thank you all for your continued support of your children as we work to create lower-risk opportunities during the pandemic.

In Partnership,

Scott

Hello Bulldog Families,

I know it might seem crazy, but February is when we start thinking about Registration for next year.  Our Counselors will be teaming with High Schools to support current 8th-grade registration for HIGH SCHOOL, and our counselors will be working with 7th graders to show them how to register ONLINE for next year.  We will also be working with Elementaries on Registering current 6th graders for next year.  Information from Mountlake Terrace High and Edmonds Woodway is below.  There will also be information from other schools as counselors work with students.  Don’t hesitate to contact us with questions as we move through the process.  If you can believe it, we are starting this a little later than usual this year due to making adjustments for the pandemic.  We will be hosting a Webinar for families NEW TO BTM on the 11th of March.  If you are receiving this, you probably are NOT new to BTM, but I wanted to get the info. out there to share.  This is also when MTHS is hosting a similar Webinar.  We will record ours and post the link on the website for those who would like to attend both.  There will be an abundance of High School registration information in Canvas next week.

In Partnership,

Scott
