IMPORTANT INFORMATION

1/20/21

Hello BTM Families,

This message contains many VERY IMPORTANT announcements so please scroll through to the end to a message about Immunization.

MLK and African American History Month:

I want our community to know that we shared a video tribute created by students in our Journalism class and other staff members to celebrate the life and legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.  In it, there was a quote from Dr. King similar to this from 1958, “True peace is not merely the absence of tension; it is the presence of justice.”  At Brier Terrace we are striving to ensure that we are a place where justice is present.  We are proactively searching for injustice in our school, whether in our classrooms and/or in our systems.  Our Equity Team and our District are guiding us through this work.  I hoping that one day we will be able to say that there is NO injustice in our school.  I also know we have work to do and we have the will to do this work.

We are currently working on ways to even more intentionally bring attention to African American Achievement throughout African American History Month, and beyond.

Mr. Turner:

Mr. Turner is continuing his health leave through March.  Please contact Mr. Morrison if you need assistance from the Administration.

2nd Semester Schedule Changes:

  • Electives - We do not have the capacity to change electives at the semester.  Our classes are quite full, so we cannot take requests to change schedules.

  • More Funding For Core Classes - We have received more funding to add staffing in Core Classes.  We will be adding classes to reduce the number of students in classes.  Some classes have been running at over 35.  In order to do this, we will have to change some students’ schedules.  We are processing this now.  This is very challenging to do in the middle of the year, but we are trying our best to make the fewest disruptions possible.  Final Second Semester Schedules will be posted in Skyward on Feb. 3rd (the day before 2nd semester begins).  We are hoping to have this completed before then, but we cannot make any promises.  Thank you for your patience as we work to make smaller class sizes, which is good for EVERYONE!

Graduation Requirement in 7th Grade!

This year we are teaching Washington State History in 7th Grade Social Studies 2nd Semester.  Please know that this is a state-mandated requirement for graduation.  If a student does not pass this class, they will be required to pass an alternative course outside of the regular school day at a future date.

Yearbook Message to Families:

Hello students and families of BTMS,

Even though this year has been different in many aspects, we are moving forward with creating a yearbook with help and input from our students, staff and families. Students have been submitting pictures and taking surveys to help us fill our yearbook pages. We have received some great pictures so far! We are still looking for pictures including pets, food, sports, where students learn at home, talents, artwork, and any other pictures you think would be a great addition to the yearbook. If you would like to submit more pictures, please have your student visit their grade level Canvas pages or by using this link https://images.jostens.com/415464267

A large part of our normal yearbook is student and staff portraits from picture day. Unfortunately, this year there is a very low chance of having an official portrait done. We are asking for you or your student to submit their own “picture day” picture so we can add it to our yearbook. We know some picture day pictures were submitted to ASB for the spirit day a few weeks ago so we will be using those as well. Please use this link to submit your portrait! https://images.jostens.com/415464267

If we don’t receive a picture before March 5th, we will be using the school picture from last year that is already in Skyward!

For this picture please take it straight on in a place with good lighting!

We are also starting to sell yearbooks! If you are interested in purchasing one for $35, use the link found on our school website and click the black button that says “Payments”. Buying a yearbook will not only pay for the book but helps to support our school and raise money for school activities in the future!

Thank you for all your support!

Half Day Half Way!!

Hello Bulldog Families!

An annual tradition at Brier Terrace Middle School is Half Way Half Day, a celebration of the half way point of the school year. This year our celebration will land on Tuesday, February 2nd. In place of regular scheduled classes there will be a brief "assembly" in the morning followed by some fun activities hosted by our staff such as trivia, crafts, baking, games, and movies. Mr. Treadway, our coordinator this year, has sent out an email to all students with some details about when and how to sign up for the activities we have planned. Please review the emails with your students and help them make a plan for signing up which will take place during Advisory this Friday.  This link was sent to students that explains sign ups.

Mr. Treadway is available at treadwayr@edmonds.wednet.edu if you have any questions.

Have a great day!

!!!Out-of-Compliance with Immunization Requirements!!!!

Please know that Patrick Roach, our school nurse, is contacting families who have students who are out of compliance.

As of August 1st, 2020, a new immunization rule requires a student to have received all of the school required immunizations that are expected by the State immunization schedule on or before their first day of in-person attendance to attend school (this includes sports and other program activities).  We have provided more details on the rule change and materials to support you at www.doh.wa.gov/schoolimms2020.

The parents/guardians are required to provide proof of their student’s immunization records to the school on or before their first day of attendance and these records must be medically verified and could include:

  • A Certificate of Immunization Status (CIS) printed from the Immunization Information System (IIS)

  • A physical copy of the CIS form with a healthcare provider signature

  • A physical copy of the CIS with accompanying medical immunization records from a healthcare provider verified and signed by school staff

  • A CIS printed from MyIR

Families are no longer provided a 30-day conditional status unless they have received the first dose of the vaccine series.  Which they are then provided the number of days of conditional status until the next vaccine series date requirement is completed.  Student Health Services has reached out to parents/guardians encouraging them to get their students caught up on vaccinations. As we are getting ready to increase the number of students returning to in-person learning at all levels, I wanted to provide a reminder that it is the duty of the building administrator by law, RCW 28A.210.120, to prohibit students from attending school for whom are not in compliance with RCW 28A.210.080 and to continue to prohibit the student until such proof of immunization, certification of exemption, or approved schedule has been provided.
